Are you tired of commuting to work? Of living for the weekends? Never getting to sleep in or take a day off when you feel like it? Do you dream of travelling but never have the time, or the cash to do so?
Then perhaps you ought to consider creating an online income. When relying on an online income, it’s best to have a few separate income sources and if you can, a passive one as well. An active online income is the same as any job: something you actively work on to get paid. A passive income on the other hand, is something you create once and then keep earning money on for years to come, if all goes well. Some examples of passive income sources are dropshipping, e-books, e-courses, articles, Instagram photos, stock photos, art. The list goes on and only your imagination sets the limits. Digital nomads worldwide have active and passive incomes and are free to use their time as they please, travel wherever they want for as long as they want, and if they can do it, why not you too?
But how do you go about creating an active online income?
The easiest way to get started is to look to what you know, what you’re good at and what you currently do for a living. Is there a way for you to work with the same things you work with at your 9 to 5, only in a location independent manner? Discuss working from home with your employer and should it be a no go, look into location independent positions within your chosen career.
Should you wish to do something different with your time than you have thus far, it’s better to look to what you know, what you’re good at and most importantly, what you like doing. Do you have an interest or a dream you’ve never pursued? Have you always wanted to be a writer or an artist but never dared to? Maybe you dream of running your own online magazine or starting an online store with your own designs?
Make a list of what you want to get out of your online active income.
What kind of money do you need to earn to live comfortably?
How much time do you want to spend working?
What do you enjoy doing?
Most skills and interests can easily be turned into an income by writing e-books, starting an e-course, creating a YouTube channel, starting a blog or an online magazine. Udemy is an excellent place to learn and teach others, and there are other sites like it. Find one you trust, decide on a topic, and just create your course. After that, all you need is good marketing to get people to see it and buy it.
If you are good with your hands, be it with clay, fabrics, glass or wood, consider spending most of your time creating what it is you create, and hire someone to create an online store and manage the online marketing to get you the customers you need. Etsy and Shopify are two great alternatives for selling your products online.
If you are into movies or books, look into subtitling and translating. Both can, with a short course or two, create a steady income source for you. I studied CC/SDH subtitling at GOSUB for a few weeks and less than a year after that, I had built an income of 5-10K a month. So I can assure you, it can be done.
To be a translator you don’t necessarily need to go through any special education beforehand. It can be enough if you are fluent in the language in question, and you know your grammar by heart. It’s not always paid as well as translating subtitles, but you can quite easily earn 1-3K a month on it.
If you decide to pursue subtitling or translating, go create a profile for yourself at proz.com. As long as your profile and CV are well presented, you’re bound to get plenty of job offers and you’ll be able to apply to jobs you find interesting as well.
Other jobs you may consider are online marketing, webdesign, app design or creating a certain app and selling it, creating websites and selling them, social media managing or being a virtual assistant. There are of course many, many other jobs apart from these that you can do. In fact, most jobs that don’t require meeting in person, can be location independent. Yoga teachers create yoga videos and start yoga channels. Healers create distance healing businesses. Doctors meet their patients via video online. And if you’re still doubting whether this is possible or not, let me tell you that there are people out there who get paid to watch Netflix. That ought to tell you that the sky is the limit and that whatever you want to do, you can do it and turn it into a career.
The point is that in this day and age, a 9 to 5 job is not a must. Working every week or every month is not a must. If you get the right kind of job, you could work a few days a month and still earn 3-4000 dollars easily. I am not saying you won’t need to work hard to get to that point, but I am saying that is definitely possible and so very worth it.
You can’t put a price to freedom, now can you?
